For the first time. Photographer Dick Mitchell brings to life the blood, sweat, and tears of one of the world's oldest athletic sports. Dick's photos give us adrenaline rushed visuals of raw virility in collegiate wrestling.

Artist Statement

Two opponents stalk each other in the center of the arena. Sizing each other up they lay their hands on each other’s shoulders, struggle, push and feign attacks. Springing without warning they’re launched through the air, tumbling across the mat; two torsos united in a knot of limbs. The attacks happen so fast I don’t know what I’ve got until I scroll back through the images. To my amazement I find instances in the action where a takedown resembles bizarre and beautiful choreography; where a mat return echoes classical figurative art; the authenticity of the struggle expressed on faces, in sweat, blood and the riveted investment of their fellow warriors.

I am looking to do more than record this action.  I’m on a quest to capture moments of authentic beauty. It is these images that I am delighted to share with you in this inaugural show at the Vault Gallery and my first solo show anywhere.

I have a deep and long standing respect and appreciation for the athletes, coaches, teams and programs invested in this sport. You inspire me to pick up my camera.  Thank you very much.
