In the early 2000s, Slava Mogutin began documenting New York’s go-go scene, taking pictures at The Cock and the now-defunct East Village bars Boysroom, Mr. Black, and Eastern Bloc, at a moment when downtown nightlife was already being ravaged by rising rents, gentrification, and increasing regulation. Now on the mark of its 20th Anniversary, the photojournalism of Slava Mogutin capturing the final years of New York Nightlifes Golden Age will be presented with over 60 never-before-seen photos. To accompany the exhibition, SoHo Project Space has published a limited-edition book with an essay by Bruce LaBruce.
“NYC Go-Go was never intended as a project, social study, or critique. It was a straightforward documentary, shot from behind the scenes through relationships built on trust… Most of the men I photographed moved between odd jobs, dancing, sex work, and what is commonly referred to as ‘gay for pay,’” Mogutin writes in his artist statement. “I found that ambiguity intriguing. Class, race, and sexuality intersected with blurred boundaries between performance and reality, fantasy and livelihood. Desire, money, power, and survival could occupy the same space.”
“NYC Go-Go is pornography, portraiture, anthropology, nostalgia and social history all rolled into one sweaty, ample basket.”
